Ma Maison Restaurant Akaroa
This restaurant is on the waterfront in Akaroa, a pretty little town about 1.5 hours from Christchurch.
We visited the Ma Maison on a Thursday evening in spring and it was a chilly evening. Thankfully they have an open log fire which not only adds to the ambience but also provides a great heat source. The place was very well patronised and the staff seemed to know a lot of the diners. This was probably not that unusual as Akaroa has a resident population of only about 700. This expands dramatically during the summer holidays and vacation weekends.
Without a doubt this was our dining highlight of our latest visit to New Zealand. We were in a party of 6. Three of the party had pork fillet, 2 had groper fillet and one had salmon. The food came out all at once, warm and absolutely delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked and I understand that the pork was also. Desserts were a triumph. Sticky toffee pudding with brandy snaps was absolutely delicious and all other choices made were similarly appreciated. A special surprise for a guest at the table whose birthday it was that day was a plate of strawberries (enough for one each of the party) with delicious chocolate dipping sauce and a candle.
Highly recommended!
Akaroa was originally discovered by the French and therefore all the street names and a lot of businesses have French names. The restaurant address is 6 rue balguerie and phone number 03 304 7658.
